Cumali Karsu, an inmate at Imrali Special Type Prison with PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, has sent a fax to his lawyers assessing the current political process.
While PKK Leader Öcalan has been prevented from meeting with his lawyers for seven months, Imrali inmate Cumali Karsu, also sentenced for being a PKK member, has sent a fax to Asrın Hukuk Bürosu (The Century Law Bureau.)
‘HUNGER STRIKES SHOULD END IN A REASONABLE MANNER’
Karsu gave the following information in the fax he sent: ‘I can only write a few words when it is necessary in these condition. An intense period has developed in the past few months.
From what we can discern from newspapers a period of action has begun in prisons. Hunger-strikes are understandable due to the sensitivity of conditions, however long periods or indefinite hunger-strikes, particularly physical damage should be prevented and is not necessary. We believe the correct thing to do is to end the hunger-strikes in a reasonable manner.’
‘SELF-IMMOLATION’S MUST END’
Also touching on the issue of self-immolations, Karsu said, ‘These incidents are very saddening for us and must cease and be prevented. Our fundamental approach during this period must be to remain healthy physically and to transform our intellectual intensity into meaningful praxis. Once again we request that you end the hunger-strikes in a reasonable manner. We await the necessary sensitivity in achieving this.’
‘DESPITE THE CURRENT CONDITIONS, THINGS WILL BE OK’
Karsu ended the fax with these words: ‘It is not necessary for families to visit at this stage. The issue is not just visits from families and lawyers. Thousands of people including lawyers have been arrested recently. Also the blockaded process, due to developments that are beyond our power, needs to be opened and continued and a social solution needs to be created. The state of things conjuncturally is not very hopeful. Time will tell what will happen. You can guess our conditions here, this is why I will not go into detail. Despite the current conditions, things will be OK. I’d like to convey our friends greetings to you all.
